Department Overview
Founded in 2003, the Department of Art History was merged in 2010 with the Graduate Institute of Art History and Art Criticism, founded in 1996, into the first and only facility that offers a consistent integration framework for both Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree, in order to further enhance the faculty capabilities and encourage sharing instructional resources. With the establishment of doctoral program in 2020, the Department of Art History has now become the foremost professional facility which aims to cultivate talents with fundamental and advanced knowledge of art history and art criticism, cultural heritage research, museum collection management and curating skills.
The Bachelor’s program is based on knowledge in art history. It’s committed to fostering talent with basic knowledge in art history, archeology, artifact conservation, museum collection management and curation.
The Master’s program is an extension of undergraduate studies toward such professional areas as art history and art criticism. Not only do students delve into Asian antiquities (e.g., ancient Chinese and East Asian vessels, calligraphy, painting, and Buddhist arts) they are also required to competently interpret modern and contemporary arts (i.e., modern East Asian arts, contemporary arts and art criticism) with expertise in Western art history.
Our PhD program focuses on the cultivation of advanced talents in ‘Taiwan Art History’. In addition to the classic research of ‘fine arts’, the program also provides courses with alternative perspectives towards various arts in Taiwan, such as traditional beliefs and religious objects in Taiwan temples, localization of Christian art and architecture in Taiwan, as well as everyday visual culture, such as production designs, fashion/popular images, book cover and page binding design, craft design and technology, etc.
